Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping betting as paid-for entertainment, with limits you set in advance and the ability to stop. This page explains the protections that exist in Great Britain, what you give up when you use a betting site that is not on GAMSTOP, and which tools and support services you can still use. It reflects information checked on 1 October 2026.
Disclosure: this site may earn commission if you join an operator through some links. Commission does not decide rankings, and nothing here is a recommendation to gamble. Gambling is for adults aged 18 and over, and it should never be treated as income or as a way to solve money problems.
What GAMSTOP does, and what it does not
GAMSTOP is the free national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling in Great Britain. When you register, operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) must block your account and stop marketing to you. You choose an exclusion period of six months, one year or five years. Once it starts, it cannot be shortened, and you must wait for it to end before you can ask to have it removed.
The scheme covers sites that hold a UKGC licence. It cannot reach operators licensed elsewhere. That is the reason some betting sites are described as "non GamStop": they are not part of the scheme, so a GAMSTOP registration does not stop them accepting you.
Why a non GamStop site changes the risk
The UKGC licence is what gives British customers enforceable rules, such as affordability and identity checks, standards on advertising and access to approved dispute resolution. An operator that accepts British customers is not the same as one that is authorised to serve them. Overseas gambling licences vary widely in how strictly they are policed, and a complaint to a foreign regulator may be slow or may go nowhere.
In practice, before you open an account at an overseas site, check:
- Which licence it holds, and whether the licence number appears on the regulator's own register rather than only on the bookmaker's page.
- Who owns the operator, as bookmaker ownership is often stated in the terms and conditions.
- Whether it offers deposit limits, loss limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and how you activate them.
- How its complaints procedure works, and whether any independent body will review a dispute.
- Whether it accepts GBP accounts. Otherwise you may pay currency conversion costs, which makes spending harder to track.
If you registered with GAMSTOP because gambling was causing you harm, using a non GamStop site undoes that protection. The honest advice is to leave your exclusion in place.
Tools that put you in control
| Tool | What it does | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| GAMSTOP | Blocks access across all UKGC-licensed online operators for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years | UKGC-licensed sites only |
| Deposit limits | Caps what you can add per day, week or month | Set within each account, if the operator offers them |
| Loss limits | Caps net losses over a period | Operator-specific; check availability |
| Time-outs and self-exclusion | Pauses or closes the account for a set period | Operator-specific; does not carry across sites |
| Gambling blocking software | Blocks gambling sites and apps on your devices, including unlicensed ones | Installed on your own phone, tablet or computer |
| Bank gambling blocks | Many UK banks let you block gambling transactions on cards | Set in your banking app; check with your bank |
Blocking software and bank blocks matter most for non GamStop use, because they work whichever site you visit. Using several tools together is stronger than relying on one.
Bonuses, payments and how they affect your spending
Large welcome offers can push people to deposit more than planned. Read the conditions before you accept any bonus. The main ones are the wagering requirement (how many times you must bet the bonus, or bonus plus deposit, before withdrawing), the minimum qualifying odds, the maximum bonus bet, the expiry date and any bonus cashout limit. Some payment methods or sports can contribute less towards wagering, or be excluded altogether.
A simple example: a £100 deposit with a 100% bonus and a 10x requirement on deposit plus bonus means £2,000 of bets before the bonus winnings can be withdrawn. That is a lot of betting for a £100 stake, and it can turn a modest deposit into a much larger spend.
Payment choice matters too. Debit cards, e-wallets, bank transfers and cryptocurrency payments each carry different fees, limits and processing times, and availability for British customers should be verified on the operator's own cashier page. Cryptocurrency values can move sharply between deposit and withdrawal, and crypto transactions generally cannot be reversed. Credit cards cannot be used for gambling with UKGC-licensed operators, though that rule does not bind overseas sites. Borrowing to gamble is a warning sign in itself.
Expect identity (KYC) checks, and sometimes source-of-funds checks, before a withdrawal. These are normal, but they can delay payment, and withdrawal disputes are harder to settle with a non-UK operator. Never assume a withdrawal is guaranteed.
Operators listed on this site
Our rankings include Tenobet, Trixino, Betninja, CoinPoker, smash, BetBluff, Emberbet, Rolletto, 7abet and Spartaza. We have not verified a licence status, responsible gambling toolset or complaint route for any of them on this page, and we have not tested accounts, deposits or withdrawals. The editorial ratings are our own assessments, not customer-review scores. Use the checklist above on each one before depositing.
Some headline offers are quoted in euros or dollars (for example Tenobet, Trixino, Betninja, smash and CoinPoker), while BetBluff, 7abet and Spartaza quote sterling. If an offer is not in pounds, expect conversion charges, and read the conditions for the exact terms. For more on casino-style products from the same type of operator, see our non GamStop casinos guide. Casino and sportsbook products often share a wallet, so a sports bonus deposit can be used on faster-moving casino games, which makes limits more important.
Signs gambling is becoming a problem
- Betting more than you can afford, or chasing losses.
- Hiding your gambling or lying about it.
- Borrowing money, or missing bills, to bet.
- Feeling anxious or irritable when you are not betting.
- Gambling longer than you intended, especially with live in-play bets or early cash-out.
If you recognise any of these, stop, set a block, and talk to someone.
Where to get help in the UK
- GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, free and open 24 hours a day, with live chat on its website.
- GAMSTOP handles registration for self-exclusion at gamstop.co.uk.
- BeGambleAware offers information and links to support.
- Your GP or local NHS services can help if gambling is affecting your health.
- StepChange and similar debt charities give free advice on money worries.
Support is available whether or not you use a licensed site, and you do not need to be excluded to ask for help.
Legal standing and eligibility
You must be 18 or over to gamble in the UK. The UKGC regulates gambling in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Northern Ireland has separate legislation. Being a customer of an overseas site is not generally a criminal offence for the player, but those sites sit outside UKGC protections, and you are responsible for checking local rules and for any tax or reporting that applies to you. Our terms and conditions set out how this site can be used, About Us explains who we are and how we work, and you can reach us through Contact Us if you spot something out of date.
A sensible way to decide
- Decide your monthly budget before opening any account, and treat it as spent.
- Set deposit limits as soon as the account is created.
- Install blocking software if you have ever struggled to stop.
- Keep records of your deposits, withdrawals and terms.
- Take a break, or ask for support, the moment betting stops being fun.
If you are excluded through GAMSTOP, the safest choice is to stay excluded. Whatever you decide, bet only what you can afford to lose.
